Portable sign permits

Portable signs are temporary, not permanently fixed to the ground and designed so that they can be moved from one place to another. They do not include sidewalk, banner or inflatable signs.

To install a portable sign you’ll need to apply for a sign permit to make sure it complies with the Sign By-law.

Register as a sign contractor

Before you can apply for a portable sign permit, you must register as a sign contractor.

To register, you must create an ePlans account. Then submit a Contractor Registration request in ePlans.

If you want to install signs on a road allowance, you must also provide:

  • Letter of credit
  • Valid certificate of insurance

Portable signs on private property

Portable signs on private property can be displayed for up to 21 days. There must be a gap of 21 days before a sign can be displayed in the same location again. You can apply for a maximum of six portable signs in a calendar year.

All portable sign applicants must have a valid Zoning Certificate of Occupancy.

After submitting your application in ePlans, you must upload the following:

  • Written consent from the owner of the premises indicating they allow the sign to be displayed for specified dates
  • Site plan that shows the proposed sign location, the name of the street it is fronting on and how far it is from property lines

If these documents are not uploaded within one business day, your application will be cancelled and you will need to reapply.

Portable signs on road allowances (roadside)

Portable signs on the road allowance are only permitted for registered community groups and the Region of Peel. You can apply for a maximum of 10 roadside sign permits per year.

If you wish to register as a community group, contact the Community Development Unit.
