Private Tree Protection By-law
The Private Tree Protection By-law (0254-2012) protects and enhances Mississauga’s existing tree cover while respecting a landowner’s right to make changes to the landscape of their property in an environmentally responsible manner.
Whether you are a homeowner, a business owner or a developer wishing to remove trees from private property, you must comply with the Private Tree Protection By-law.
Removing Trees on Private Property
When You Need a Permit
You only need a permit to remove trees on your private property if you are removing three or more trees 15 cm (6 inches) or greater in diameter, including dead and/or dying trees, per calendar year.
If you aren’t sure whether or not you own a tree that borders City property, you may request a tree ownership inspection.
How to Apply for a Permit
Complete the Tree Permit Application Form including the base fee if applicable and submit it along with supporting documents to Parks & Forestry.

Permit applications, cheques and securities for Parks & Forestry may be dropped off at Mississauga Civic Centre, 300 City Centre Dr, in the box adjacent to the north side of the building along Princess Royal Dr. Please include a Payment Submission Form indicating who it’s from, what it’s for, property address and project name.
Note: The drop box slot is only 8 inches by 1 inch wide and cannot accommodate bulky packages.

For Ash and Dead Tree Removals ONLY:
If a certified arborist has signed off on the application for an ash or dead tree removal, you have the option to submit your tree permit application by email to email@example.com.
What Happens Next

No fee is required for trees that are verified as dead, dying or hazardous. However, a permit is still required if you are removing three or more trees per calendar year.
Fees associated with healthy trees can be found on our Fees & Charges webpage. Fees include a base permit fee for the first three trees being removed, a fee for any additional trees and security and replacement fees.
All fees are non-refundable.
If you’re removing three or more healthy trees on your property, replacement trees are required for each tree removed. You can plant a replacement tree yourself on your property based on the criteria below or you are required to pay a predetermined fee for a tree to be planted on City property by City staff.
If you choose to replace the tree(s) yourself, replacement trees must be at least 1.8 m tall if it’s a coniferous (evergreen) tree or at least 6 cm in diameter if it’s a deciduous (leafy) tree. A healthy tree that is 49 cm or less must be replaced by one tree. If a healthy tree is 50 cm or greater in diameter, it must be replaced by two trees.
A deposit valued at the cost of a replacement tree is required for one year after the tree is planted. If the replacement tree is healthy one year after being planted, your deposit will be refunded.
To get your deposit refunded, call 3-1-1 (or 905-615-4311 from outside City limits) one year after you’ve planted the replacement trees. We will schedule an inspection of the new trees before refunding your deposit.
